The RPL Process
The RPL Process

After initial registration the Applicant will meet with the Assessor to provide the assessor an opportunity to determine whether the Applicant may have the ability to provide sufficient evidence to satisfy RPL requirements.

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) information package is designed to organise an assessment process for a chosen Qualification/Unit of Competency

Assessment Involves Judgement

A consideration for assessment is that an applicant may be able to more efficiently demonstrate skill and knowledge, by the conduct of a practical and observable task in preference to a Competency Conversation.

Recording Assessment is Critical

RPL is an evidentiary process therefore records of all aspects of presented documents. conversations or skills demonstration viewed that support the claim of prior learning are necessary.
The assessment record is a legal document and must be signed, dated and stored.

Candidate Kit

The kit provide the assessor with valid information that the applicant has achieved skills and knowledge to proceed further with the application. A lack of valid information will result in a conclusion to the process.

Self – Assessment Questionnaire

Provides visual and documentary evidence of the capabilities and evidence of the applicant’s abilities. It is suggested that the applicant should include photographs and videos to validate authenticity. The applicant will complete their work history and identify from a given list the tasks they have previously completed with each previous employer

Referee Testimonials

Applicants also need to provide contact details for a minimum of two (2) referees who can confirm their industry skills in context and over time.
Current or previous employers and/or referees to confirm the applicant’s skills and experience in this qualification/occupation and when they were achieved. The referees may fill out the appropriate form and return to you to confirm your judgement. The assessor will communicate with the Referee to validate their qualification and record the interview as evidence

Knowledge Test

A series of questions are asked fo the student to allow the applicant to demonstrate their acquired knowledge. These questions may be answered by research on the internet however an applicant must put their response in their own words unless quoting legislation or definitions.

Competency Conversation

This section is to be used to determine and record applicant’s competence by a competency conversation. There is a list of required questions, the applicant must make some notes in preparation and submit them to the assessor to provide time for the Assessor to determine of further questioning is required.

Note the sessions will be recorded.

Documents used in construction

Documents that are required as evidence are listed , where a student does not have access to all the listed forms the Assessor is to make blank forms available for the student to complete which can provide additional evidence.

Note the Applicant will be required to find information within these documents.

Task Videos

The applicant will be required to take simulated videos of a number of tasks typically that include”:

  • Conducting meetings / toolbox talks
  • Meeting with a client
  • Providing instruction to workers on a variety of tasks
  • Performing trade tasks
  • Operating relevant plant & equipment
  • Completing the required documentation
  • Conducting site quality and safety inspections.

NOTE: These videos when viewed in context with the competency conversation, knowledge questions, self-assessment, referee reports and forms review will more than adequately demonstrate competence across the subset.
